Estonia Telecommunications, Mobile Phone and Broadband Market Statistics and Analysis Report 2022 – ResearchAndMarkets.com

DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The “Estonia – Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband – Statistics and Analysis” report has been added to from ResearchAndMarkets.com offer.

Estonia advances with 5G services

The Estonian telecommunications regulator first announced its intention to auction three licenses in the 3.6 GHz range in February 2019. This spectrum was to be used for 5G services, but the auction was canceled shortly. after wireless ISPs complained that the auction terms favored existing MNOs, and that a fourth license should have been offered to encourage a new market entrant.

The regulator responded by saying that three licenses would have improved network speed and capacity, which are clearly two important considerations given the growth in mobile data traffic expected from subscribers adopting 5G services.

One consideration was that Russia uses the 3.6-3.8 GHz range for military communications, and there could be cross-border interference pending Russia’s migration to other frequency bands. Estonia cannot yet use spectrum within 700 MHz for 5G since Russia still uses this spectrum for TV broadcasting.

The auction was finally launched in May 2022. Elisa obtained one of the three licenses offered, after having offered 7.206 million euros (against a reserve price of 1.597 million euros).

This license is subject to less strict restrictions with regard to border areas with Russia. The auction for the second available license attracted interest from Telia, Tele2 and Bite Lietuva. This license is for 130MHz (3410-3800MHz), with the same reserve price.
